Transportation to and in Tartu
The only international airport is in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. There is good air connection between Tallinn and other European countries. Further information on airport website: www.tallinn-airport.ee. Tallinn can also be reached by ferry from Helsinki and Stockholm. The Old City Harbour is situated right in the city centre. Further information on website: www.portoftallinn.com. Tartu is located in the southern part of Estonia, 186 km from Tallinn and 222 km from Riga (Latvia’s capital).

We kindly suggest you to take a regular bus to Tartu. The buses leave from Tallinn to Tartu in every 15-30 minutes. In case you prefer train transport you should take into account that trains leave from Tallinn to Tartu twice a day (early in the morning at 7:46 and late in the afternoon at 17:00).
From Tallinn Airport
To get from the airport to the bus station or train station we kindly suggest you to take a taxi. There are taxies available in front of the Airport building. Since Tallinn Airport is small you will easily see the taxies waiting in front of the arrivals gate. The cost of taxi drive to the bus station should be approximately 60-70 EEK/ 5 EUR. The cost for a taxi drive to the railway station should be approximately 100-150 EEK/ 8 EUR
From Port of Tallinn
To get from the harbour to the bus station or train station you should take a taxi. You can find taxies in front of the harbour building (and if you can not find one, please turn to the information desk). The taxi drive to the bus station should cost approximately 75-100 EEK/7 EUR. The taxi drive to the railway station should cost approximately 40-50 EEK/4 EUR.
* The cost of taxi drive may slightly vary depending on the traffic and company. Please note that most of the taxies accept only cash payments, therefore you should change some money in advance, or at the currency exchange points (there are exchange points at the airport and at the harbour).
From Tallinn Bus Station to Tartu
The taxi takes you to the bus station where you can see the schedule of buses on the wall of the waiting hall. Buses leave from Tallinn to Tartu in every 15-30 minutes. You should purchase the ticket (which costs approximately 100 EEK/7 EUR) from the ticket office inside the bus station. The bus schedules are also available online at www.bussireisid.ee which gives you a good overview of all the departure/arrival times and fares. The drive from Tallinn to Tartu takes approximately 2,5 hours.
Tartu bus station is situated in the city centre. Please take a taxi from the bus station to your hotel (except for guests staying in Hotel Tartu, which is situated across the street from the bus station). You can find taxies in front of the bus station and the drive to the hotels located in the centre costs around 50-75 EEK/5 EUR.
From Tallinn Railway Station to Tartu
When the taxi has taken you to the railway station you should go into the main building and purchase a ticket from the ticket office. The approximate price range for a train ticket is 90-125 EEK/8 EUR (depending on the class of travelling, I or II). You can ask further information about train times on phone +372 3 848 301. The drive from Tallinn to Tartu takes approximately 2,5 hours. Tartu railway station is situated near the city centre. By car to Tartu
You can easily travel by car to Tartu from any location using the road E67 (also known as Via Baltica) to pass Latvia and Lithuania. After reaching Estonia you should follow road signs which will lead you straight to Tartu. In case you are coming from the Scandinavia you should use the Tallinn-Tartu highway and follow the road signs.
By plane to Tartu
Please note that currently there is no regular air transport available to Tartu.
Public transportation in Tartu
Public transport in Tartu is by buses. Cost of a single ticket is 13 EEK if bought from the kiosk. Tickets can also be purchased from the bus drivers, cost 16 EEK. Ticket is valid only if punched on board.
Taxi
Cost of 1 km is approximately 10-12 EEK. Minimum fee is 35 EEK. Most of the taxis do not accept payments by card.
