 Projects:

Project: Development of environmentally friendly plant protection technology (1998-2003)
Leader: Anne Luik
Researchers: Külli Hiiesaar, Aare Kuusik, Ants- Johannes Martin, Enno Merivee, Luule Metspalu ja  Marika Mänd , Ülle Lauk ja Anne-Liis Sõmermaa
  • Study on taxonomy, biology, morpho- and ecophysiology   of plant pests and diseases and their natural antagonists.
  • The influence of agrotechnology, field size and  location on the occurrence of plant pests, their natural enemies and insects pollinators.
  • Natural plant protection means; modes of action and guidelines for practical use. Optimation of use conventional pesticides.
Grant 3535: Colorado potato beetle (CPB) (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say Coleoptera) in Estonia: distribution, abundance and life history, considering different potato cultivars  and cultivation conditions, natural means for control (1998-2001)
Leader: Luule Metspalu
  • Investigation of eco-physiological adaptations  enableing the establishment of the Estonian  local populations of CPB.
  • Study on the influence of the diffent potato cutivars to  development and occurrence of CPB.
  • Testing of natural means for the control  of CPB.
Grant 4092  Morphological, electrophysiological and behavioural bases of prey searching in ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) (2000-2003)
Leader:  Enno Merivee
  • Establishment of the typology, numbers, and distribution patterns of antennal sensilla in some ground beetles having potential plant protectional importance and/or different search behaviour.
  • Explanation with electrophysiological experiments food and conspecific beetles’ odours (aggregation and sex pheromones) olfactory effect on the antennal chemoreceptors of various ground beetles.
  • Explanation with behavioural tests, if and how (anemotaxis, chemotaxis, chemokinesis) food and conspecific beetles’ odours effect the searching behaviour of the ground betles being studied.
Grant 4105 Taxonomical composition and abundance of the predator arthropods depending on crop, agrotechnology and field location (2000-2003)
Leader:  Anne Luik
  • Establishment of species composition and abundance of predatory arthropods especially carabids in different crops.
  • Estimation of the  influence of field size and margins to carabid abundace.
  • Estimation of cropping technology (organic, conventional) to the preadators’ abundace.
Grant 4116 Comparison of intensive and ecological farming: its impact on the biodiversity in Estonia (2000 –2003)
Leader:  Marika Mänd
  • Comparing ecological and conventional  farming for assessment  their impact on biodiversity:  estimation of pollinators abundance, their species diversity and foraging strategy in ecological and conventional farms.
  • The influence of landscape structure to the pollinators.
  • Study on  accumulation of fertilizers and pesticides in plants and its impact on bumble bee forage behaviour.
